Nigeria and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are working on frameworks for environmentally sound waste management in Africa, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.
The report said the work includes attention to informal waste workers, who collect and sort a large share of recyclable material in many African cities, and to how they can be protected as waste systems change.
Waste management sits at the meeting point of public health, urban planning and pollution control, and informal workers are often left out of formal policy.
